Digital marketing is one of those terms that’s shrouded in confusion and seems to mean something different to everyone. It’s also been made to seem way more complicated than it actually is, which is a shame really, as it’s really pretty straightforward.

So what is digital marketing? Well, as simple as this is gonna sound, digital marketing is just marketing, using digital tools. And marketing is nothing more than communicating value to your customers. So, digital marketing is therefore communicating value to your customers using digital tools. That’s it.

Traditional VS Digital Marketing

The first thing to do is understand the difference between traditional, and digital marketing. Traditional marketing relies on tools and mediums like the newspaper, radio, TV, magazine, billboards, direct mail, and any form of print really.

Digital on the other hand is made up of tools like search engine marketing, social media, content marketing like blogging, articles, or video creation, email marketing, and online pay per clicks advertising.

When you’re talking about traditional versus digital marketing, you’re talking about the tools more than the strategy behind them. And more accurately, you’re talking about which form of media you’re going to use to communicate your message on, a traditional one, or a digital one?

The Future Of Digital Marketing

As consumer media consumption trends continue to shift dramatically away from traditional and towards more and more digital content, there will be a time in the near future where we no longer refer to it as digital marketing and simply call it what it is. Marketing.

Elon Musk: How to Start a Business! Seriously Take Notes!
Did you know Tesla has a zero dollar marketing budget?

It’s true.

Despite operating in the emerging alternate energy car market (and rampant skepticism that electric cars could even compete), Tesla had an incredibly successful IPO in 2010 and continues to struggle to produce cars fast enough to meet demand.

It seems amazing that they’ve been able to pull that off without marketing, but Elon Musk’s explanation for their success is simple: a relentless focus on making the highest-quality cars possible.

The vast majority of Tesla’s budget (and about 70% of Musk’s time and energy as CEO) is devoted to research and development. Musk only spends 2 to 3% of his time talking to the press, with plans to cut it down to 1% so he can free up time for – you guessed it! – more focus on engineering and design.

Marketing done right can be extremely powerful; I’m not saying it has no place in your business model. The vast majority of us don’t have Elon Musk-level capital to fund our businesses and get them off the ground. But if it comes down to a choice between more marketing for a mediocre product, or money money spent improving product quality, I’d choose quality every time.

Quality outlasts trends and bids for brief attention. It leaves a lasting impression – one that turns customers into lifelong fans and the most effective marketers you could dream of.

Tool #1. Google Search Console

Google Search Console will show you all the keywords that you’re ranking for that are driving the majority of your traffic.

By creating your own headline or title tag that’s more appealing, as well as including the keyword, you’re more likely to get clicks.

Tool #2. Ubersuggest

Google Search Console has already showed you what keywords you’re getting traffic for. If you plug these keywords into Ubersuggest, it will show you all the long tail variations of those keywords. If you already rank for the headterms, it’s really easy to rank for the long tail terms.

Tool #3. Yoast SEO Plugin

This plugin will make your life so much easier if you run your website on WordPress.

Yoast SEO Plugin will help you optimize your code, title tags, meta description and create a XML sitemap.

Tool #4. Websiteresponsivetest.com

Your site needs to be mobile compatible and putting your website into this tool will tell you, if your website is responsive and mobile friendly.

Tool #5. Google Trends

By creating a brand, you’re going to do better on Google.

And Google Trends shows you how your brand is doing compared to other people. You want the bigger brand and Google Trends will show this.

Tool #6. Google PageSpeed insights

More people use Google on their mobile devices than on their desktop computers. That’s why speed is so important. Google has an index just for mobile sites. So, you want to ensure that your website loads as fast as possible.

Tool #7. Keywords Everywhere

Keywords Everywhere plugin will show you how many people are searching for your terms and related keywords as you’re using Google. It’ll give you more keyword ideas, because you can see the search volume and how good some of these keywords are.
